After catching the morning weather report, we upped anchor and motored to the south 10 miles to anchor off of Lynyard Cay. Lynyard is one of the few places we both like in the southern Abacos and it was as pretty this time as we remembered it. After anchoring and putting the boat to bed we donned our snorkeling gear and hopped in the water.
I wanted to take my spear but I have been having some serious elbow problems the last week and Amy talked me out of doing anything that would hurt it further. I agreed to leave it behind only if she agreed to swim back and get it if we found anything really edible on our swim. She agreed and off we went.
We swam out to check our anchor and see how it was set and then swam towards where we knew there t be some little coral heads. We saw a giant sea turtle which was mega cool. He hung out and let us get within ten feet of him before he swam off. Of course we forgot our underwater camera so you will just have to take my word on how cool he was.
A little while later we came upon another coral head and I stopped Amy. There, sitting all by himself, trying to be rock was the holiest of holes. The elusive Hogfish. Dammit where's my spear?!!? I pointed him out to Amy and she said shed go get my spear and spear whacker device and I could follow him until she returned. Off she went and I played super secret fish spy with my new best friend. We went here and there and stopped for bite to eat at a freshly discarded conch shell. He was wary, but as long as I stayed a few feet away he didn't seem to panic.
Ten minutes later Amy returned with my spear and I switched from Spy Master Bozo Deluxe mode over to Bozo Fish Hunter Deluxe and then snuck in for the kill. I'd like to say my supreme skill and hunting prowess led to the inevitable victory, but mostly the fish just sat there. I swam within 8 feet of him, pulled back and shot him in the head. It was sort of anti-climactic in the end, but maybe we can make it sound better in editing.
We collected dinner and swam back to the boat. After cleaning our fish and putting the dive gear away we spent the afternoon reading and playing on the computer. Around 5 I lit the grill and we had garlic butter, grilled hog fish with baked potatoes and a side of homemade garlic crisps. Quite tasty indeed.
Amy did the dishes after dinner and turned in around 6 pm. I stayed up with the weasels and we shared a whiskey in the cockpit as the full moon rose up over the island. Around 8pm they too tired and so off to bed they went. I stayed up until 10 writing this log so that hopefully I can sleep until at least 4 am when I plan to get us up and headed out towards Eleuthera and points south. See you tomorrow.
