Hostage by Beer (by Tom)

Hello and welcome to Friday. We are still anchored in Thompson Bay, although we did move back down to Eva Cay yesterday so as to be nearer the free wifi signal emanating from the Long Island Breeze.

I spent most of this morning putting the finishing touches on Bob's sunscreens. As of now, I've finished everything except the installation of 50 snaps that support the roll up mechanism of the 10 interlocking sunscreen. Early this afternoon Amy and I took the panels over and test fit them and with the exception of 1 panel that is an inch too long, they look pretty good. Hopefully tomorrow I will finish up and we can call this project done.

Around 3 pm we made a big batch of pretzels to take in to the Winter Residents party put on by the Bahamian tourism office for people who call Long Island home at least part of the year. Cruisers were invited and asked to bring a dish to share, so we made pretzels. As it turns out, only the cruisers were asked to bring something and the people who either own or rent houses just brought themselves.

The party was pretty lame as we had to sit through and hour and a half of Bahamian officials saying thank you to each other twenty two times. It wouldn't have been so bad except that they didn't open the free bar until after the lame ass speeches. I hate being held hostage by beer.

The bureaucratic glad handing was bad enough, but about half way through the speeches. the group of home owner people took it upon themselves to open up our pretzels. I saw several pretzels being gobbled up during the speeches and by the time the food and drinks were officially made available, our pretzels were all gone. The food put out by the Long Island Breeze was woefully lacking in quantity and by the time we got through the food line, there was nothing left. What a ripoff!

The entire food assembly was gone twenty minutes into the party but we were able to score a couple of beers and a rum drink so we consoled ourselves with these. As soon as the food was gone most of the home dwellers left, but we stayed on for an hour and listened to the Long Island rake and scrape band play. They were ok but great.

We returned home around 9 pm and made grilled chicken thighs for dinner. What a lame reception.
